The company behind plans to build Britain’s 1st artificial surf pool are said to be “seriously excited” about the possibility of building near Newquay. Crunch talks on the project are ongoing over the next couple of weeks.
The complex is planned to be built at Winnards Perch over a 100 acre plot of land. The wave pool was approved by the Restormel Borough Council and is expected to cost in the region of £25m.
But that’s not all. Plans are in the pipeline to build surf pods, cafes, restaurants, a surf shop and approximately 125 holiday cottages!
Marcus Cryer a senior member of the Queenswood Group (who are behind the plans) believes that the application should be accepted. "You can never be 100 per cent confident that it will go through, but given the amount of support we have had, I am pretty confident that it will be passed, we are seriously excited about this development."
The plans were previously seen in July but concerns were brought up about a conference centre and the idea was shelved. Mr. Cryer now believes the problem has been solved. "It was worded in our application that we would have a conference centre on the site. It wasn't a conference centre in its fullest sense but people who are there on-site could use it for business purposes and so on. It is more of a residential conference facility and the council fully understands this now."
The pool will feature facilities made to cater for pro’s or beginners, with waves ranging from one to nine feet. This pool will be exclusively for people staying at the resort but it is hoped that in the long term local people will be able to use the pool through a membership scheme.
Planning officers for the Restormel company believe that the complex will prove popular with locals and tourists alike with a positive impact on local employment also expected: "This significant tourism development, including surf wave generator facility, is likely to attract a large number of visitors to the area and therefore the development is likely to have a positive impact on the local economy." The Retallack Surfside resort is also expected to create about 50 full-time and a number of part-time jobs.”
