Aging and the Good Mattress

In the USA, the average life expectancy has increased dramatically. In
1900, a male child born in that year could only expect to live to age 46,
whereas today can expect to live more than 72 years. A female child born
in 1900 could expect to live 48 years, and today can expect to live 79
years. These are average numbers, so many people will be living into their
80s and 90s. The human body changes in many ways with age. Typical things
people first notice are presbyopia, where the eye cannot focus so easily
on close objects and some loss of ability to hear high pitched tones.
These usually start around age 40. Body fat increases too, usually up to
30%, and the fat redistributes. Even with the decline though, most organs
have considerably greater functional capacity than the body needs
called "functional reserve", to maintain normal function. As we age,
disease is responsible for loss of function more than any single thing.
Normal aging allows for survival. But declining function calls for some
things to help maintain health especially from adverse effects of the
environment, toxins, and illness.

The single best thing you can do for the aging body is to keep it
comfortable. And the single best thing for that is to ensure that the
eight hours per day you spend sleeping are on the best mattress you can
find. Where a good mattress will not stop aging, it can slow down some of
the more painful effects of back and neck discomfort, aches and pains, and
offer good support to shifting body mass. Memory foam mattresses are
designed to conform to the shape of the body and not to put excess
pressure on joints. If the body is already fighting a disease process, a
good memory foam mattress can act as a comfort. It is also less allergenic
and healthier. If you put a good mattress at the foundation of your aging
protocol, and move into a more active lifestyle and monitor your
environment for things which can help, you can make sailing into older
years a pleasant experience rather than a drudgery.
